Bedtime Blessing

I would like to tell you that I am the kind of mom who regularly prays for her children, but that is just not true. Sure, if they are sick or struggling with a particular situation I will lift them up in prayer but I have had trouble over the years establishing a good rhythm for praying over and blessings my children.

We have a very simple bedtime routine (mostly because my husband and I are totally spent by the end of the day and we are counting down the minutes until we can collapse on the couch). We put all 3 of our kids to bed at the same time. Yup. After teeth are brushed and jammies are on we all gather in someone's room for a brief devotional thought (we are currently using this book) and then we all take turns praying. We have been doing this 5-10 minute bedtime routine for a few years and it works well for us but we've recently introduced a Sabbath variation that I am really loving!

Every Sunday evening, instead of gathering for a family devo and prayer, we have all the kids wait for us in their beds and Ben and I go room to room and pray over each child individually. We ask them if there is anything in particular they would like us to pray about (and this offers great insight into the things that are weighing on their hearts and minds) and then we pray a brief prayer of blessing over each child. I can tell the kids enjoy the individual attention and snuggles and it has brought great joy to my heart to hear my husband pray over our kids, lifting up their various trials and triumphs.

This is such a simple routine - can you tell we are into simple around here?!? Why not give it a try?

The LORD bless you and keep you;

the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;

the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
