That Person Needs Privacy

A simple way to begin the conversation about modesty and purity with young children.

This morning my oldest son was helping his brother and sister watch a show on Netflix. In the process of doing this we had live T.V. on for about 20 seconds. We don't watch much live T.V. (except during football season) because with three young kids in the house it just feels too risky. You never know when some scary image or inappropriate content is going to pop up in the middle of your living room. But today I was cleaning the kitchen and my kids saw a few seconds of some commercial and I overheard my oldest son say to the group "Nobody look! She needs privacy!" and this made my heart glad.

Several months ago I read an article about teaching young children about modesty and purity and I loved the simplicity of the phrase "look away, that person needs privacy". There's no shame in that phrase. In fact, it is a great way to teach your children how to show respect for another human being. It's simple to teach and easy to remember. We talked about this a couple of months ago and haven't mentioned it again since and today my 6 year old's first response to immodesty was to turn away and provide privacy for the woman on T.V. I praise God for the work He is doing in my son's life!

This conversation will grow as our kids grow but this simple phrase is a great place to begin. If you'd like to take this conversation to the next level, we recommend reading Good Pictures Bad Pictures with your elementary aged children.
