What Can I Give Him?

The haunting holiday carol, "In the Bleak Midwinter" offers us the following thoughts:

What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man, I would do my part. Yet what I can I give him--give my heart.

When I was growing up, my parents established a tradition in our home that is in line with the above lyric. Every year we would all trace our hands on contact paper and carefully cut them out. Next, we would cut out paper hearts and glue a small picture of ourselves in the center. Then, on Christmas Eve, right before heading up to bed, we would kneel down as a family in front of the Nativity set and we would give our hearts and our hands to Jesus.

This is so simple but so profound. In fact, as I reflect back on this tradition, I feel a bit emotional. I want my kids to understand the deep truth of Psalm 100, which states that it is "He who made us and we are His." We are His. We belong to Him - body, mind, and soul - and in this short and sweet ceremony, we offer ourselves to the God who first offered Himself to us.

Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship.
