Do Your Eyes Light Up?

Many years ago, long before I had children of my own, I heard a guest on a popular talk show say something about parenting that I never forgot - "Your kids can tell whether or not your eyes light up when they walk into the room."

Even today the truth of this statement hits me in my gut. In the blink of an eye we can communicate so much - for better or for worse. I think about this often and I am grateful to have heard this wisdom and to have practiced this small but powerful greeting over the years.

God is a wonderful parent to us and we, as earthly parents, get the weighty and glorious responsibility of representing His care and provision and steadfast love to our children. Scripture indicates that our heavenly Father watches with anticipation for us and welcomes us with joy when we enter His presence and so as His chosen representatives, we aim to welcome our children into our presence with this same demonstrative joy.

Eyes tell the truth. Beyond the words of welcome that are extended, we know when a person is happy to see us or not. I pray that my eyes will always communicate welcome. And more than that, when my kids come into my presence I want them to feel that I am glad. I make an intentional effort to practice this in the mornings. Honestly, there are many mornings that I would rather not see my lovely children quite so early, but I try to always greet them with a smile. I try to stop what I am doing and walk toward them with a hug. I try to greet them with eyes that are full of light and joy and welcome because this is the way the Lord greets me.
