And We Wonder Why the World is Broken

I am grieving. I grieve over violence and hate and death. I grieve the solutions being pedaled by our leaders - solutions too small to fix a broken world. I am grieving...but I do not grieve as one who has no hope.

Do you ever turn on the news and wonder how humanity became so terribly confused? It's impossible not to shake your head when you hear and see some of the nonsense coming from the masses. This is not a political post or a racial post - I intend for this to be a Christian post. The answers for our mess do not lie with politicians or social leaders, and they certainly do not lie within ourselves - the only answer for sin and it's destructive effects is our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Psalm 121:1-2

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

God's ways are always right and good and they always lead to life but ever since the first man and woman walked the earth us humans keep thinking we know better. We prefer to be God rather than belong to Him. It is in this audacious rebellion against our Maker that our troubles begin. We know God has commanded us to limit sex to the marriage bed but we think we have a better way and then we shake our fists at heaven wondering how a good God could allow disease and single-parent homes and abortion. We know God tells us that all men and women are created in His image and that each life is therefore valuable, but we think we have better ideas about how to determine a person's worth. We lean on our own understanding and then wonder how a good God could allow hate and racism and slavery and murder and abuse. We know that God said our bodies are His temple and that we are to care for them but it's our life and our body and we'll do what we want....and we wonder why the world is broken...

Jeremiah 9:12-14

Why is the land ruined and laid waste like a wilderness, so that no one passes through? And the Lord says: “Because they have forsaken my law that I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice or walked in accord with it, but have stubbornly followed their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them.

We have a family mission statement and it is as follows: In our family we seek to enjoy, demonstrate, and testify to the goodness of God and the wisdom of His design by joyfully living according to His Word.

Following God and living according to His laws doesn't mean we won't ever have any problems but the wisdom found in His word is life-giving for individuals and societies and the world. God, in His kindness and foreknowledge has already provided the answers to the challenges we face in this life. How is it that people can't see the reason and beauty and rightness of God's law?

I stumbled upon one answer this week in Psalm 115:

4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. 5 They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. 6 They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. 7 They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. 8 Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.

We resemble what or who we worship. Those that worship gods who can't see or hear eventually become blind to truth and deaf to reason. As believers we can pray for God, in His mercy, to open the eyes of the blind and open the ears of the deaf that they might have yet another chance to turn and be healed.

We do not need to love ourselves more. The answer is not more seminars and education. Our salvation doesn't lie in Washington D.C. We need the Lord. We are not the answer. Jesus is the answer. We need to repent of our constant attempts to be God and humbly submit to the only True God and the wisdom of His ways. Only then will we see true healing and true peace in our world. And Believers...this begins with us...this begins in our homes and our communities. Let's testify to the goodness of God and the wisdom of His design by joyfully living according to His word.

Joshua 24:14-15

“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Psalm 19:7

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;

Galatians 5:19-23

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Isaiah 55:6-9

“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
